"Carved Lace Folder – “with The Chalice Of Light” – Folk Art – Le Puy-en-velay"
Mid-19th century France – Auvergne – Haute-Loire A modest but soulful object, this hand-crafted hardwood lace folder is one of those silent relics of rural daily life. It was likely given or passed down as a token of attention, faith, or encouragement during the slow hours of bobbin work. The deeply incised decoration reveals a large Eucharistic chalice standing at the center of a taut, symmetrical composition, surrounded by a rigorous geometry of diamonds, cross-hatching, and protective friezes. The whole evokes a miniaturized sacred architecture, almost an intimate cathedral, offered to the working hand. In this Velay region, where piety was inscribed even in the lacemaker's tools, the chalice does not only refer to the altar: it becomes a symbol of hope, inner strength, and transmission. The hand that traced these lines was neither naive nor insignificant: it knew, in carving, that it was inscribing much more than a motif – a message. The wood is old, lightly polished by use. The grain, regular, gently follows the engraving. The object fits in the palm, but opens a door to a whole world of fervor, slow gestures and restrained emotions. Condition: wear from use, beautiful patina. Stable and legible object. Dimensions: Height: 13 cm Width: 7.7 cm Delivery: All deliveries are handled by DHL Express only.
