Cup, Carved Horn Hunting Cup – Heraldic And Military Motifs – Folk Art
Late 19th century
Spain
A rare hunting cup crafted from genuine horn, finely carved in the tradition of late 19th-century folk art.
The piece is richly decorated with an extensive iconographic program combining military, heraldic, and hunting symbols. One side features a shield surmounted by a mural crown and surrounded by a laurel wreath, adorned with a lion passant as well as various heraldic attributes evoking the rank of general. An engraved banner bears the inscription “General Ramiro Gonzalez,” accompanied by butterflies, leafy branches, and plant motifs.
The other side is adorned with a simply rendered horse, in the naive style characteristic of folk art, evoking the world of hunting and the cavalry.
The engraved geometric friezes framing the composition, as well as the quality of the carving, attest to genuine artisanal craftsmanship. This cup served as both a ceremonial object and a commemorative or honorary keepsake.
The horn features a beautiful, nuanced golden patina, highlighted by the sculpted reliefs. There are slight signs of wear and minor irregularities.
A beautiful piece of folk art, combining military, heraldic, and hunting motifs, particularly decorative and unusual.
