Both a working tool and a personal object, this remarkable carved wooden bobbin lace folder illustrates the decorative richness of the folk arts of the Massif Central and the importance of bobbin lace in the rural traditions of Haute-Loire and Velay.

Entirely carved by hand, it features a particularly dense and elaborate design on both sides, organized around large geometric and radiating compositions.

One side is centered around a large rosette inscribed within a square, accompanied by two smaller rosettes and motifs that can be interpreted as initials (D and J), likely those of the owner or the person for whom the object was intended.

The other side features a particularly spectacular composition, dominated by a large swirling rosette surrounded by stylized foliage motifs and deeply carved geometric figures.

The entire design is framed by a remarkable sequence of triangular friezes, sawtooth patterns, diamond points, and angular motifs. The faceted work, achieved by directly carving the wood, creates a powerful interplay of light and shadow that brings the entire surface of the object to life.

Beyond its utilitarian function related to lace-making, this type of folding box is firmly rooted in the tradition of personal folk art objects. The considerable amount of work devoted to its decoration, the likely presence of initials, and the care taken on both sides attest to an object that was held in special regard.

Every incision, every rosette, and every geometric motif bear witness to patient work, executed entirely by hand. The slight irregularities in the carving and the marks left by the tool are integral to its character and highlight the deeply personal nature of these folk art creations.

The surface retains a beautiful antique patina, polished by use and repeated handling. The exceptional density of the decoration and the quality of its execution make this a beautiful example of folk carving applied to lace-maker’s tools in the Haute-Loire region in the late 19th century.
