Netsuke - Saru Monkey With Rope Collar - Carved Boxwood - Japan - Edo Period
Edo period (1603-1868)
Japan
Rare Japanese netsuke carved from a single piece of boxwood depicting a seated monkey (saru) wearing a necklace of twisted rope around its neck. The animal is depicted in a calm, attentive attitude, its limbs tucked beneath it, while the sculptor has vigorously emphasized the modelling of the coat and the protruding ribs with deep, dynamic incisions.
The face features a particularly lively expression, characteristic of many representations of the saru in netsuke art. The deep-set eyes, short muzzle and collected posture give the animal an expressive, endearing presence.
The monkey occupies an important place in Japanese culture, appearing frequently in popular beliefs, legends and the decorative arts. In the world of netsuke, it is one of the most popular animal subjects of Edo period sculptors.
The two himotoshi for passing the cord are discreetly arranged between the animal's legs, in keeping with its function as a counterweight worn on the kimono belt.
The sculpture has a beautiful honey-brown patina acquired through handling, highlighting the quality of the modeling and the finesse of the details.
