Modernist Terracotta Sculpture – Highly Stylized Human Figure – 20th Century
A sculpture in unfired terracotta, depicting a human figure in a deeply hunched posture.
With its posture and very compact silhouette, this sculpture is reminiscent of the Indonesian figure of the “Orang Malu” (“shy man”), though it is not possible to confirm this identification. Here, the artist has taken stylization to the extreme: the anatomical forms are deliberately reduced to a few essential volumes, giving the piece an almost abstract quality and a beautiful sculptural power.
The material, left unglazed and in its raw state, further reinforces its primitive and contemporary appearance. A particularly decorative piece, with a strong presence despite—or perhaps because of—its extreme simplicity.
Anonymous and unsigned sculpture, 20th century.
Weight: 8.6 kg.
Please note: three small chips, visible in the photographs.
An original sculpture that would fit just as well in a contemporary interior as in a collection dedicated to modern sculpture or primitive forms.
