Light Under the Trees
Born in Lille and later based in Paris, Edmond Bailleul belonged to a generation of painters who, building on Impressionism, placed the landscape at the heart of their artistic exploration. Exhibiting at the 1908 Salon d’Automne, he developed a style of painting attuned to the variations of light and the seasons.
Woodlands, trees by the water, winter landscapes, Mediterranean shores, and Parisian views make up the bulk of his artistic world. His loose brushwork and nuanced palette convey not so much the topographical precision of the places as their atmosphere: the rustling of the foliage, the transparency of a sky, or the light filtering through the trees.
Edmond Bailleul delicately attests to the enduring presence of the Post-Impressionist landscape in early 20th-century French painting.
