Post-impressionist Painting
Edmond Bailleul
French painter active in the early 20thcentury
Born in Lille and later based in Paris, Edmond Bailleul belonged to a generation of painters who, building on the legacy of Impressionism, placed landscape at the heart of their artistic exploration. Exhibiting at the 1908 Salon d’Automne, he developed a style of painting sensitive to the variations of light and the seasons.
Woodlands, trees by the water, winter landscapes, Mediterranean shores, and Parisian views make up the essence of his world. His loose brushwork and nuanced palette convey not so much the topographical precision of the places as their atmosphere: the rustling of the foliage, the transparency of the sky, or the light filtering through the trees.
An artist who delicately bears witness to the enduring influence of the Post-Impressionist landscape in early 20th-century French painting.
