Self-taught, he began as a docker in Port-au-Prince, while painting murals in voodoo temples. His virtuosity in composition and color attracted the attention of the Haitian Art Center, which he joined in the late 1940s. In the 1950s, he participated in one of the most important decorative ensembles in the history of Haitian art: the monumental frescoes of the Episcopal Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Port-au-Prince. His work is characterized by a lush palette, a keen sense of detail, and an idealized representation of tropical nature: exotic birds, lush vegetation, pastoral scenes bathed in light.
