Gaston Sébire - Under The Snow
Artist: Gaston Sébire (1920-2001)
Gaston SÉBIRE (1920-2001) - Under the snow.
Oil on canvas signed lower left.
Giltwood frame.
Dimensions of oil alone: 17.7 x 67.5 cm
Sébire began exhibiting around 1945 in galleries in Rouen, then at the Galerie du Bac in Paris, at the L'homme témoin exhibition alongside Bernard Lorjou and Yvonne Mottet. This group advocated a return to realism against the trends of contemporary art, particularly abstract art. In 1949, the group was joined by Bernard Buffet and André Minaux, soon to found the Jeune Peinture movement.
Attached to the École de Paris and continuing a landscape practice inherited from the French painters of the late 19th century, Gaston Sébire was appointed Painter of the Navy in 1973. This Japanese-style canvas is particularly atypical for the artist.
