From The Studio Of Frans Van Mieris The Elder (1635–1681), Woman In Front Of A Mirror.
Artist: Frans Van Mieris L'ancien
This painting depicts “Woman Before a Mirror” by Frans van Mieris the Elder, dating from around 1662. Mieris frequently returned to this subject. A young woman stands at her dressing table, styling her hair in front of a mirror. At her side, a Black maid holds a jewelry box. Frans van Mieris belonged to the Leiden school of fijnschilders (fine painters) and was renowned for his virtuosity in rendering the texture of luxurious fabrics. The reverse of the painting bears a label from The Boydell Galleries in Liverpool, an art gallery specializing in the sale and restoration of paintings. The date “1912” is visible at the bottom, indicating that the work was exhibited or cataloged in London. The panel also bears the mark “XN395,” which corresponds to an auction house mark. The painting is executed on a wooden panel. A dendrochronological analysis was conducted, proving that the painting was created in the 17th century; the report is available upon request. The painting is in excellent condition. The frame was crafted in the 17th-century tradition by the Smolka workshop in Vienna.
