Christian Lepère – “le Pays D’octobre” – Original Etching, 22/50

Artist: Christian Lepère

Christian Lepère (born in Paris in 1942)
“Le Pays d’Octobre”
Original etching, signed in pencil and numbered 22/50.

A spectacular, fantastical composition depicting an imaginary port city, dominated by exuberant Gothic architecture. In the heart of the city, the docks are bustling with people, goods, and barrels, while several large sailing ships fill the harbor. Bridges, half-timbered houses, bell towers, spires, and fantastically shaped buildings stretch all the way to the horizon under a stormy sky, with a mountain and a seascape in the background.

A work particularly representative of Christian Lepère’s dreamlike and fantastical universe, where imaginary architecture, landscapes, and teeming scenes blend together with extraordinary attention to detail. The artist cites, in particular, the influences of Bruegel and Hieronymus Bosch.

Christian Lepère has devoted more than thirty years to etching. A member of the Artistes Français and the Salon d’Automne, he received the Grand Prix at the Osaka Festival in 1987 and the Artistes Français Medal of Honor for Engraving in 1990. His etchings are featured in the collections of the National Library, the Annecy Museum, and the Belfort Museum, among others.
