Large, Richly Carved Renaissance-style Two-piece Sideboard – “anno 1634”
Imposing two-part carved wooden sideboard, featuring particularly ornate architecture inspired by the Italian Renaissance.
The upper section opens with two large glass-paned doors, framed by abundant high-relief carving: foliage scrolls, volutes, mascarons, human figures, fantastical creatures, and animal motifs.
The side panels are carved with full-length figures and figures in armor.
The upper frieze features two particularly decorative cartouches inscribed with “ANNO” and “1634”.
This date is a remarkable feature of the decoration.
The piece is part of a later historicist production that draws on 17th-century models.
The lower section, also highly detailed, features drawers adorned with mascarons with rings, followed by two large doors with heavily molded geometric panels.
Each door features a large relief-carved motif at its center.
The side panels and the lower crossbar continue the decorative motif of figures, foliage, mythical animals, and scrollwork.
The back, of much simpler construction, features large panels assembled on crossbars, contrasting with the exuberance of the front.
Given its size and the profusion of its carvings, this is a particularly spectacular ceremonial piece of furniture, designed to serve as the centerpiece of an interior.
