Renaissance Sideboard With High Diminutive, Recessed Double Body, Solid Walnut, Early 17th Century
Magnificent and rare double-body sideboard in solid walnut, called "diminutive".
It opens on the front with four leaves featuring richly carved panels depicting female figures.
The broken-panel pediment is also richly carved and adorned in its center with a male figure holding a scythe.
The belt below the central shelf is adorned with attractive carved brackets.
The rear uprights, as well as the front uprights, are in the form of columns terminated by an Ionic capital.
Our piece of furniture rests on four ball feet, the whole topped by a wide molding.
The sides are panelled in flat band.
The darkwork is original and in very good condition, a rare fact for a piece of furniture from this period.
Very fine work from the early 17th century, of high quality workmanship, however we would point out that the pediment was made in the 19th century, and we also think that the carvings representing the figures were probably made at the same time, carving the panels that were originally intended to be identical to those on the sides ( en plat de bande ), thus bringing this piece of furniture back into line with the pronounced Renaissance taste under the influence of Viollet-Le-Duc.
We would like to point out some minor repairs to the corners of the bottom molding.
We would point out that this piece of furniture dates, at the latest, from the early 17th century and would like to emphasize the quality of its condition
This piece of furniture is small in size, giving the possibility of positioning it easily.
