Beautiful Italian Marble Angel, 17th Century – Former Francesc Cambó Collection

A remarkable bust of an angel or cherub carved from Carrara marble, an Italian work from the mid-17th century.

The young angel is depicted with his face slightly tilted, his gaze turned toward the sky. His gentle, meditative expression, his full cheeks, and the delicate modeling of his mouth lend him remarkable charm and presence.

The facial features are sculpted with finesse, as are the soft, flowing locks of hair and the two large wings that harmoniously envelop the bust. The composition, both balanced and expressive, is fully in keeping with the tradition of 17th-century Italian Baroque sculpture.

The work rests on an elegant white marble pedestal added in the 19th century.

This sculpture comes from the prestigious collection of Francesc Cambó (1876–1947), a Catalan politician, patron of the arts, and major collector, who assembled a remarkable collection of antique works, part of which was bequeathed to Spanish museums.

A period photograph shows this same angel displayed on the mantelpiece of Francesc Cambó’s mansion on Via Laietana in Barcelona. This valuable historical document confirms and illustrates its provenance.

A high-quality Italian sculpture of undeniable charm, boasting a particularly prestigious provenance.
