Love For Doves - Large 19th-century Terracotta Sculpture With An Oxidized Finish
A charming and significant patinated terracotta sculpture depicting Cupid, or Eros, playing with two doves.
The young god of Love, recognizable by his wings, is depicted seated on an oval terrace, surrounded by flowing drapery. He gently holds a dove in his hands while a second one rests beside him. His quiver and arrows—traditional attributes of Cupid—are placed at his feet.
His childlike face, abundant curly hair, finely detailed wings, and the movement of the fabrics come together to create a scene full of grace and tenderness. The doves, symbols of love and fidelity, reinforce the poetic character of this depiction.
This 19th-century terracotta piece, likely from the Napoleon III era, beautifully echoes the gallant and decorative style of the 18th century, which was particularly popular during the reign of Louis XV.
Beautiful antique patina in shades of brown, which pleasantly highlights the delicacy of the modeling and the composition’s numerous details.
Good overall condition. A few cracks, separations, or minor historical imperfections are visible in the drapery and peripheral areas; please examine the photographs carefully.
A beautifully proportioned decorative piece, particularly appealing for its subject matter, its dynamic composition, and the quality of its craftsmanship.
