Pair Of Terracotta Shoes - Early 1900s

White marble sculpture “Madonna and Child,” from a Ligurian workshop in the Genoa area—17th century.

An elegant and refined devotional sculpture depicting the Madonna and Child, masterfully carved from white marble, attributable to European production from the second half of the 19th century.

The Virgin is depicted standing, wrapped in a flowing mantle that falls with natural elegance down her figure, as she tenderly holds the infant Jesus in her arms.

The composition stands out for the nobility of its composition, the sweetness of its expression, and the refined quality of its modeling.

Of particular note is the rendering of the drapery, with deep, sinuous folds that lend movement to the robe, creating refined effects of light on the marble surface.

The faces, rendered with delicate softness, accentuate the intimate and contemplative character of the scene, while the rendering of the hands and anatomical details attests to remarkable attention to detail.

The white marble, with its warm ivory hue and enhanced by the natural patina of age, lends the work a monumental presence despite its modest dimensions.

The figure, conceived in the round, features a deliberately more rough-hewn and textural finish on the back, which clearly highlights the quality of the sculpture carved directly from the marble block.

A work of great appeal to collectors, capable of fitting with natural authority into both a collection of ancient art and a formal setting.
