Sister Rosallis’s Frame, “mirror Of Soul,” Blown Glass, Circa 1700
Artist: Art Religieux
A personal object of devotion, a spiritual mirror?
In a Louis XIV-style carved and gilded wood, typical of convent reliquaries, under a piece of blown glass so thick, wavy, twisted, and greenish in hue that one never sees anything like it, there is a text from the Bookof Exodus, which the sister must have chosen—a verse considered the “call” or the source of her vocation.
This text is handwritten, framed within a floral cutwork border and embellished with fragments of silk and gilding in faded colors within the openwork.
This frame, placed in her cell, undoubtedly accompanied the life of prayer of a cloistered nun—Sister Rosallis? as marked on the back?
Such an iridescent glass could have been an important aid for the examination of conscience.
Dimensions: 28 cm x 22 cm.
Frame in rather worn condition, with rough gluing and faded gilding, but a very beautiful object of spirituality.
Probable date: early 18th century.
