Gondola-shaped "duchesse Brisée" Chair, Louis XVI Period, 18th Century, Circa 1780, With Armrest And Footrest
A Louis XVI-era gondola-style "Duchesse" armchair, 18th century.
Crafted from waxed and patinated beech, our "Duchesse" features a pronounced curve in the seat and backrest, creating a deeply enveloping sense of comfort.
Beautiful molding and attention to detail, particularly evident in the discreet and elegant scroll motif on the tops of the armrests (photo 10).
Fluted legs throughout the chair.
The set is in very fine condition. The woodwork and frame are in very good condition, and the recent upholstery is also in very good condition. The exceptionally thick cushions (over 25 cm thick) are extremely comfortable and allow this broken duchesse chair to be used as a daybed.
Beautiful satin fabric with a ribbon-wrapped floral pattern showing some minor wear; we would also like to point out several rings of varying sizes and small, fairly discreet spots (likely water stains—see photo 11) as well as another slightly grayish stain—and therefore a bit more visible—on one side of the bergère’s seat cushion (see photo 9). These marks remain fairly inconspicuous, and the fabric has otherwise retained the vibrancy of its colors.
Dimensions of the wingback chair alone:
width: 76 cm
backrest height: 89 cm
seat height at the highest point of the cushion: approximately 56 cm (height without cushion: 36 cm)
depth: 82 cm
Dimensions of the footrest section alone:
Length: 133 cm
Width: 75 cm
Backrest height: 78 cm
Seat height at the highest point of the cushion: approximately 56 cm
Total length of armchair + footrest: 2.10 m
