Bibron: Important Pair Of Empire-period Candlesticks Forming Candelabras

Important pair of Empire-period candelabra-style four-light sconces.

Each candlestick rests on a circular, hollow-cast base, chiseled with a beaded border and, at the center, a frieze of palmettes and fleurons on an amati background; the baluster shaft is adorned at the shoulder with three masks depicting Zeus, Athena, and a satyr/mascaron; the central bowl is chiseled with a frieze of fleurons between two beaded bands; the branches consist of three light arms in a foliage-entwined design, each terminating in a mask of Helios (God of the Sun / Greek mythology), the central bowl with a lid topped by a torch. Each part (candlesticks, central candle holders, central bowl of the branches, and torch base) bears a coat of arms surmounted by a count’s crown.Coat of arms of the PELERIN family (also known as De PELERIN) and, more specifically, of Antoine Paul PELERIN, Captain and made a Knight of Saint Louis on August 17, 1822.

Each piece bears the First Title hallmarks known as the “Rooster” (.950) and guaranteed for PARIS 1809–19, as well as the hallmarks of Master Goldsmith Jean-Pierre-Nicolas BIBRON (JPB, a lion and a star), received in Frimaire of Year V, corresponding to late 1796.

An impressive and spectacular pair of candelabra-style sconces, a completely intact set with all its original candle holders and coat of arms. The set is in good period condition, with slight distortions and minor scratches from use. A true marvel to discover through the attached photos...
