Namakdan Baluch Khorasan Iran 61 X 46 Cm

Iranian wool namakdan, dated in Farsi (Persian) 1385, or 1965. Good condition. Some signs of wear.

The namakdan, or “namek donneh,” was used to carry salt. The interior was lined to prevent the salt from coming into contact with the wool. Namakdans can be used as wall hangings.

Authentic namakdan woven by the Baluch people of Khorasan, in northeastern Iran. Techniques: sumak and kilim.
It is decorated with horizontal bands, the widest of which features the eight-pointed Median star motif. A zigzag “running water” border frames the lower part of the namakdan.
On the back, it is dated 1385 in Persian numerals and marked with the abbreviation “ghamari.” Ghamari means “lunar,” referring to the lunar calendar.
