Vintage Hand-knotted Anatolian Gördes Prayer Rug – 100 × 59 Cm
Description
This vintage hand-knotted Anatolian prayer rug originates from the Gördes weaving tradition of western Turkey and displays the distinctive architectural mihrab design for which the region is renowned. Woven in wool on a cotton foundation, the composition features a soft sky-blue prayer niche enclosing a stylised Tree of Life and floral motifs, framed by multiple geometric borders in ivory, turquoise and muted terracotta tones. The harmonious palette and finely balanced drawing reflect the restrained elegance associated with classic Anatolian weaving, while the naturally aged colours and gently softened pile enhance its authentic character. Combining traditional symbolism with refined craftsmanship, this decorative rug is equally suited to both period and contemporary interiors.
Region & Attribution
Gördes, Western Anatolia, Turkey. Based on the characteristic stepped prayer niche, stylised Tree of Life, geometric border arrangements, colour palette and weaving structure visible in the photographs, this rug is best attributed to the Gördes weaving tradition. While influenced by nearby Kula and Ladik workshops, the overall design is most consistent with a vintage Gördes example dating to the mid-20th century.
Condition
Very good vintage condition with age-related, even wear consistent with careful use. The pile remains well preserved with attractive natural patina, colours retain excellent clarity, and the original fringes display light age-related wear.
