Antique Anatolian Door Mat, A Melas With Vibrant Colors
Artist: Art Villageois De Melas
A beautiful Anatolian door rug, originating from the Milas region of Turkey, notable for freshness and vibrancy of its colors. Woven on a small loom and knotted with the large knots characteristic of Anatolian village weavings, it features a typical compartmentalized geometric design.
Theluminous hues—reds, saffron tones, pinks, blues, and ivory—create a decorative ensemble and reflect the Anatolian weavers’ taste for bold and warm color harmonies.
The multiple borders and stylized motifs give this piece a strong ethnic presence and undeniable authenticity.
There is little doubt as to the age of this work. It can be dated to late19th century or around 1900.
Having served as a door curtain or wall hanging, it was spared from wear caused by foot traffic, which explains the good overall condition of surface.
As is often the case, the upper fastening strip has been nailed in place and shows visible signs of wear.
There are also a few small holes, visible through the fabric, which are not particularly serious.
These minor flaws can easily be mended with wool and a needle.
An authentic, decorative piece full of character, representing Anatolian folk art.
Dimensions: approximately 160 × 90 cm.
