Kilim Soumak Shahsavan Iran 172 X 58 Cm
Open Gorjin (pack bag) Shahsavan Iran wool, cotton warp, circa 1950. Good condition. Wear consistent with age.
Two techniques used for this Shahsavan: soumak* in the center (originally, front of the bag) and kilims with bands (originally, back of the bag). Zoomorphic squirrels and spiders are featured on the soumak section, along with a polychrome border inspired by briquetage.
*Soumak: a wrapped weave technique (embroidery), called suzan in Iran, suzani meaning 'needle-embroidered'.
The Shahsavan territory is located south and west of the Caspian Sea, in Iranian Azerbaijan. Composed of Kurdish, Persian, Turkish, Tajik, and Caucasian ethnic groups, the Shahsavan confederation was formed during the reign of the Safavid ruler Shah Abbas (reigned 1587-1629).
Free Chronopost delivery for France and Europe. Feel free to contact us by phone or email. (We ship our rugs and kilims via Chronopost or Colissimo, at our expense (up to 30 kg) in mainland France and Europe).
