Ardebil, Iran Rug 306 X 175 Cm

Carpet from Iranian Azerbaijan (Northeastern Iran), wool, cotton warp and weft, circa 1940. In used condition (see photos), slightly trapezoidal in shape (306 x 175/165 cm). The securing knots have been restored in our workshop.

Ardebil is an ancient city located in a mountainous region. Zoroastrianism originated in this region. Safi Ad-Din saved the city of Ardebil from plunder by Tamerlane’s Mongol army in the very early 15th century. This historical event contributed to the rise of the Safavid dynasty (1501–1736).
It was from this period onward that carpet-weaving centers emerged in the cities of Tabriz and Ardebil. The first medallion carpets were made in Ardebil.
An exceptional medallion carpet, made by Ustad Maksud Kashani in 1539–1540, is housed at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

This Ardebil carpet from in the 'kellé' is recognizable by its traditional border. It is part of a group of Ardebil carpets, inspired by Senneh carpets—known as “sennehbaft”—featuring a Herati* or mahi design, which appears in the field of the carpet.

We wanted to “save” this rug. Although the rug is frayed over a large portion of its surface, it retains the soul and elegance of antique rugs. It has been washed, and we have re-sewn the securing stitches. It can still be enjoyed for many years to come. An authentic piece.

* Herati pattern: a diamond-shaped motif featuring a flower and surrounded by four curved leaves resembling fish (mahi).
