Iranian wool Namakdan, circa 1940–50. Very good condition. A small sign of wear on the back.

Decorated with tassels, this traditional Gashghai Namakdan from the Fars region (southwestern Iran) is a fine example of the work of Gashghai women. The front features knotted stitches, and the back is made in the kilim style.
Various borders (“Herati,” “running water”) frame the center, which features an eight-pointed Median star. Authentic piece.

The namakdan or namek donneh was used to transport salt. The interior was lined to prevent the salt from coming into contact with the wool. Namakdans can be used as wall hangings.

The Gashghai Confederation comprises various tribes. Some examples: the Bozorg Kashkulis (the great ones), the Kuchek Kashkulis (the small ones), the Shishbolukis (six districts), the Amalehs or Yalamehs (workers, servants of the Khan).
