Bakthiar Djahad Iran Rug, 352 X 92 Cm

Iranian wool rug, cotton warp and weft, circa 1970–80. Very good condition. A comfortable rug that can withstand heavy foot traffic.

The Bakhtiari people live in Chahar Mahal (western Iran). The major centers of Bakhtiari rug production include the villages of Shahre Kord, Shalamzar, Tchalechotor, Sarman, Armenibaft, and Faradoumbé, known for the göl farang pattern.

An elegant Bakhtiari rug in the 'khénareh' size, composed of five elaborate and refined medallions featuring cypress*, rose, tree, bird, and boteh** motifs... A beautiful border featuring the 'göl-e-bölbül'*** motif, along with four other small borders—'running water' and 'herati' (flowers)—frame the carpet’s field.
Note: there is a small stain in the fringes.

This carpet draws its inspiration from antique pieces as well as from carpets known as “Sherkat farsh,” which can be translated as “state carpets.”
Beginning in 1936, at the initiative of Reza Pahlavi Shah and continuing through the mid-20th century, the Iranian government established a state-subsidized institution to preserve ancient and traditional patterns. These carpets helped preserve and pass on the craftsmanship and tradition of Persian carpets.
Later, in the early 1970s and 1980s, the same principle was revived, particularly for Bakthiar carpets under the name “Djahad.”

*The cypress refers to Zoroaster, an Iranian prophet (6th century BCE) who is said to have had two cypress trees planted in the Khorasan Desert to ward off ogres. Legend has it that upon his death, Zoroaster was reincarnated as a cypress, a tree, a palm, or drops of water (boteh).

**Boteh: An ancient motif with various meanings. It can represent Zoroaster’s transformation into a cypress—a symbol of eternity—but also into a drop of water, a palm tree, or a tree. The term “boteh” means “flowering bush” in Persian. There is a similarity to yin and yang.

***Göl-e-bölbül: a motif depicting roses and birds (nightingales).
