Between the 18th and 19th centuries, at the height of the Grand Tour and archaeological discoveries, sculptors in Roman workshops drew inspiration from ancient models: a taste for vases modeled after archaeological finds, such as this one, which echoes the shape of the Roman “olla,” became widespread. The vases were crafted from fine colored marbles, such as porphyry, portoro, and serpentine.
