Madonna And Child, Painting Under Glass, 18th-century Italian School
Madonna and Child with Saint Joseph, painting under glass, 18th-century Italian school.
Painting under glass experienced an extraordinary flourishing during the 18th century, linked primarily to domestic devotion; in fact, during this period, sacred themes were a recurring motif. Oil, tempera, or enamel paints were applied cold onto the transparent support, often embellished with gold or silver leaf: the artist painted on the back of the glass (the verso), working in a mirror-image manner and reversing the normal layering of colors; the foreground details (such as faces or hands) were sketched first, followed by the garments, and finally the background.
While the 18th century in Italy saw a vast production of low-quality paintings under glass—due precisely to the genre’s popularity in private devotional circles—high-quality paintings, such as the one in question, executed with refined artistry, are, on the other hand, very rare.
The painting is in excellent condition and the glass shows no damage; it also retains its beautiful original frame made of wood gilded with gold leaf. Any halos visible in the photos are due to reflections on the glass, which are difficult to avoid during photography.
The work as a whole can be dated to the second half of the 18th century.
