19th Pair Of Neoclassical Sculptures In Patinated Bronze From The Late Grand Tour
Pair of bronze sculptures depicting mythological allegories, from the late Grand Tour period, second half of the 19th century.
Inspired by the Mannerist style, the two bronzes depict, on one side, Hermes—identified by his caduceus and winged helmet—and, on the other, a female deity associated with mechanical elements (a gear and a hammer), likely representing an allegory of craftsmanship or industry.
The allegory of Industry and the figure of Hermes (or Mercury) are linked by the concepts of ingenuity, industriousness, commerce, and manual or intellectual skill. In classical mythology, Hermes is the god of commerce, eloquence, inventions, and swift transactions—qualities closely linked to productive and commercial activity.
The works feature refined chiseling and a rich patina, reflecting the European collectors’ taste for classically inspired bronzes.
