19th French Napoleon III Style Athénienne , Gilded Bronze And Mahogany

Napoleon III-era Athénienne in chiseled and gilded bronze and mahogany, second half of the 19th century.

The Athénienne was a completely new and multifunctional type of Neoclassical French furniture, used as a jardinière, washstand, incense burner, or brazier. It derives from ancient classical forms, such as the “Tripod of Isis” found in the Temple of Isis in Pompeii in 1760, and from Olympic choral torches, such as the one that adorned the Athenian monument to Dionysus, popularly known as the “Lantern of Lysicrates.” One of the earliest recorded designs for an athénienne was by Jean-Henri Eberts, editor of *Le Monument du Costume*, first publicized in *L’avant-coureur* in September 1773. A specimen was presented to Madame du Barry (1743–1793) in Louveciennes in 1774, and an athénienne based on Eberts’s design is now housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Good condition, original gilding. Minor signs of age, some wear to the gilding.
