A rare and elegant curved chest of drawers from the Transition period, marked J. F. LELEU, one of the most prestigious Parisian cabinetmakers of the 18th century, who was granted master status in 1764. Heir to the craftsmanship of Jean-François Oeben, for whom he served as chief collaborator, Jean-François Leleu developed a style of remarkable finesse, combining the late curves of the Louis XV style with the emerging rigor of the Louis XVI style. His furniture is now featured in the most prominent public and private collections.

This charming chest of drawers features two large, curved drawers at the front, fitted with dovetail joints, offering ample storage space. The crossbars are skillfully concealed, accentuating the purity of the dynamic front.

It is entirely veneered with sumptuous rosewood, arranged in symmetrical sheets that reveal a particularly expressive grain, framed by light-colored wood fillets forming understated rectangular panels. The sides are treated with the same care and also feature curly veneer framed by fillets, demonstrating particularly refined craftsmanship.

The piece rests on four highly elegant, curved legs, topped with slender, chiseled, and gilded bronze feet. The scalloped lower rail is adorned in the center with a rich gilded bronze clasp, which harmoniously balances the composition.

All of the bronze fittings are of very high quality: the lock plates, the dynamically shaped pull handles with rocaille decoration, and the feet all feature fine, lively chiseling, retaining a beautiful gilding that perfectly highlights the deep tones of the veneer.

The chest of drawers is topped with a thick slab of Aleppo breccia marble, featuring warm hues ranging from red to brown, enlivened by ivory and cream veins. Its molded edge perfectly follows the curved lines of the piece and elegantly highlights its design.

The “J. F. LELEU” stamp, visible on the frame, authenticates this piece as the work of one of the greatest master cabinetmakers of the reign of Louis XV and the early Louis XVI period. Jean-François Leleu is now recognized as one of the major designers of the Transition period; his works are regularly featured in international auctions and are held, notably, in the Louvre Museum.

With its elegance, the exceptional quality of its veneer, the balance of its proportions, and the excellence of its craftsmanship, this chest of drawers stands as a remarkable testament to Parisian cabinetmaking in the second half of the 18th century.
