An elegant Louis XV–Louis XVI Transition-period commode with a raised top, crafted around 1770–1775, perfectly illustrating the evolution of French taste toward Neoclassicism while retaining the soft lines inherited from the Louis XV style. Of remarkable craftsmanship, this chest of drawers captivates with the balance of its proportions, the finesse of its marquetry, and the richness of its gilded bronze ornamentation.

The front features four drawers arranged in three rows, with the two shallow upper drawers situated above two wide drawers. This elegant arrangement, highly sought after during the Transition period, gives the piece a light and refined silhouette.

The front is veneered with rosewood carefully selected for the beauty of its grain, framed by amaranth inlays and satinwood fillets, forming a geometric composition of great simplicity. The sides are also richly paneled and veneered according to the same principle, reflecting the meticulous craftsmanship extended even to the secondary parts.

The slightly curved legs further evoke the Louis XV style, while the highly structured composition of the marquetry panels already reflects the influence of the Louis XVI style. This harmonious blend of the two styles is characteristic of the finest furniture of the Transition period.

The finely chiseled and gilded bronze hardware is of very high quality. It includes:

• delicate lock plates decorated with knotted ribbons and foliage;
• circular pull rings crowned with a laurel wreath;
• slender fluted corner moldings adorned with acanthus leaves;
• enveloping gilded bronze clamps protecting the curved legs;
• a remarkable openwork central clasp adorning the lower crossbar, featuring a particularly elegant design.

All of the bronze elements feature crisp, deep chiseling and a very high-quality gilding, which fully contribute to the piece’s prestigious character.

The chest rests on four curved legs, topped with their original feet, lending the piece a great sense of visual lightness.

It is topped with a superb Aleppo breccia marble (or purplish breccia marble, depending on the name used), featuring shades of cream, ivory, dusty pink, wine-red, and purplish brown. Its thick, beak-of-corbin molding elegantly highlights the piece’s quality and offers a refined contrast to the warm tones of the precious woods.

The drawers, joined with dovetail joints, retain their beautiful depth and attest to high-quality traditional craftsmanship. The interior, made of solid oak, is in keeping with 18th-century cabinetmaking techniques.

With its high-quality veneer, elegant brass hardware, and balanced design, this chest of drawers is representative of the finest Parisian workshops of the Transition period. Although it is unmarked (or the mark is to be specified if it exists), it exhibits all the characteristics of furniture crafted by the great master cabinetmakers of the 1770s.

In excellent condition, it has undergone a high-quality historical restoration that respects the original materials. Its warm patina, antique marble, and perfectly preserved bronze fittings make it a prime piece for a collection or a prestigious interior.
