****************

Pitchers made of pewter in a baluster shape with a pedestal base, a straight-sided cup, a raised lid with a flat top and a small rim, featuring a thumb rest with two knobs.
Hallmark: Crowned CC / 1709 / TOL (for Tolosa).
Height: 21.7 cm.
TOULOUSE, first half of the 18th century.

An elegant example of rare provenance in very fine condition. This raised lid with a flat roof is of medieval inspiration; Toulouse is the only center to have preserved this style in the 18th century
These pitchers served as wine measures during the Ancien Régime. The capacity of those used in inns, taverns, etc., had to be periodically inspected by royal or ecclesiastical authorities to ensure “fair measure” for the consumer.
In Toulouse, the regulations of Louis XIV’s 1691 edict regarding the hallmark were not enforced, and we know of only the dates 1691, 1695, 1699, 1700, and 1709. Since these items lack a master’s hallmark, it is therefore not possible to precisely date the objects bearing them.
