18th-century drawing of a phoenix on the pyre, on a sheet of vellum (parchment), in oil pastel, charcoal, and ink.
Note the traces of writing at the top of the drawing (palimpsest—skin scraped to be reused, or exposure to sunlight?)
The phoenix on the pyre, rising from its ashes, is both an alchemical symbol and a Masonic symbol, as seen in our drawing, where the pyre is composed of logs arranged in the shape of a St. Andrew’s cross. 
This Masonic symbol is found notably in lodges of the Primitive Scottish Rite (PSR), the earliest traces of which date back to the 18th century (circa 1780). 
This may be linked, perhaps, to the “Rosslyn Phoenix” at the Orient of Namur, Belgium. 
The inscription: HIC MIHI DULCE MORI, meaning “Here it is sweet for me to die,” suggests rebirth, renewal of knowledge, transformation, change, progress, and new understanding...
