This majestic sculpture measures 80 cm in width and is signed "Gibert" on the base.
Lucien Gibert (born June 21, 1904, in Saint-Étienne; died March 23, 1988, in the 13th arrondissement of Paris) was a French sculptor and medalist.
He began exhibiting at the *Salon des Artistes Français* and the *Salon des Indépendants* in 1923. He was awarded the gold medal at the 1937 World's Fair. After winning a grant for French Equatorial Africa in 1948, he traveled first to Algeria and then to sub-Saharan Africa, bringing back sketches and photographs that inspired numerous sculptures, which he subsequently exhibited at the *Salon des Artistes Français*.
His sculptural groups featuring massive stone figures adorn stadiums in Charléty, La Courneuve, and on Rue Championnet. He executed many state commissions, such as *Jeune Fille du Sud* (Young Girl from the South), exhibited at the Montpellier museum; *Danseuse Algérienne* (Algerian Dancer) for the Museum of Overseas France; and works such as *Offrande* (Offering), *Femme au bas* (Woman with Stocking), and *Maternité* (Maternity) for the Museum of Modern Art in Paris.
He also created over two hundred medals for the *Monnaie de Paris* (Paris Mint).
He died on March 23, 1988, in the 13th arrondissement of Paris and is buried in Père Lachaise Cemetery.
