Joseph François Girot (known as Reverend Father Dom Luc Girot) was a French painter born on August 25, 1873, on Rue du Faubourg Tres Cloître in Grenoble, and killed at Dugny, Meuse department, during the Battle of Verdun, on May 7, 1916, while serving in the 140th Infantry Regiment as a medic and volunteer chaplain. A student in Gustave Moreau's studio with his friend Jules Flandrin, an anarchist who professed atheism, François-Joseph Girot took the Benedictine habit at the age of 27. He was ordained a priest on June 21, 1907, at the En Calcat Abbey in Dourgne (Tarn). He was mortally wounded on May 7, 1916, at Dugny, Meuse Department, and died that night at the field hospital. He was officially declared dead on May 8, 1916. He was a private, serving as a stretcher-bearer and medic in the Headquarters Company, and as a volunteer chaplain.
