Born in Mohon on May 1 1928, near Charleville-Mézières, he had a hard-working childhood after earning his elementary school diploma and surviving purulent pleurisy at the age of four. He was displaced during the war and has worked since the age of 14, holding various jobs: working in a butcher shop with his father, repairing bicycle tires, working as a laborer in construction, and riveting in a factory.
At age 25, he moved to Paris and worked in the restaurant industry and in the automotive manufacturing sector to earn a living. With an artistic temperament, in the 1970s he took theater classes to become an actor and met the actor Daniel Russo, then a young student.
For five years, he studied diligently from live models and plaster casts. He took a few painting classes and began creating his own paintings, which he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon des Artistes Français.
In 1987, he decided to open his studio-gallery, where he is still based today and which has made him one of Montmartre’s leading figures. His location in lower Montmartre led him to specialize in paintings of Montmartre, although his subjects also include flowers, views of Paris and New York, landscapes of Provence, and café interiors.

The Musée de Montmartre exhibits several of his works, which are frequently featured in auctions, while the Moulin Rouge—which considers him the last great painter of Montmartre—has published a lithograph of his composition.

He is considered one of the greatest painters of the “Montmartre School.” Several retrospectives of his work have been held.
