Pair Of "montgolfière" Chairs

Pair of Louis XVI-style chairs in lacquered wood and velvet, featuring a hot-air balloon motif.

In 1783, the Montgolfier brothers’ achievements drew large crowds and inspired cabinetmakers of the time, such as Jean-Baptiste Demay and Georges Jacob, who created designs for armchairs and chairs with backs shaped like hot-air balloons—a design that became a classic of the Louis XVI style.

The pair of chairs we are offering follows this design, with the hot-air balloon—serving as the backrest—subtly depicted right down to the gondola.
The two chairs, upholstered in a beautiful blue velvet, rest on four tapered, fluted, and scrolled legs.
Note the presence of dowels on the backs of the chairs.

Made around 1950.
