19th Century French Bronze Allegorical Sculpture of Cherub Painter with Mirror by Sylvain Kinsburger
An exquisite and rare late 19th-century French bronze figure, featuring an allegorical depiction of Cupid as a painter, sculpted by the re-nowned French artist Sylvain Kinsburger (1855–1935).
This charming objet d'art showcases a mischievous, finely detailed winged cherub who has temporarily laid down his traditional bow and quiver of arrows on the ground. Instead, he takes on the role of an ar-tist, playfully holding a painter's palette in one hand and a brush in the other.
He stands on one foot upon the lower crossbar of a studio easel, which is elegantly draped with a bronze fabric framing an oval, thick-bevelled mirror.
The composition is full of movement and classical whimsy, typical of the French Beaux-Arts and romantic tradition. The sculpture is raised on a beautifully contoured, octagonal pink marble base resting on small gilt bronze bun feet.
Standing at a total height of 34 cm (approx. 13.4 inches), this exquisite piece is designed as a cabinet bronze or a highly decorative showcase sculpture rather than a functional vanity mirror.
