After Alexandre Cabanel (1823–1889) Tamar And Absalom,
Artist: D’après Alexandre Cabanel (1823–1889)
After Alexandre Cabanel (1823–1889)
Thamar and Absalom
Painting on porcelain plaque
A remarkable porcelain painting faithfully reproducing Alexandre Cabanel’s masterpiece, *Thamar*, which was successfully exhibited at the 1875 Salon and is now housed at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
The scene depicts a dramatic episode from the Second Book of Samuel: the young Tamar, dishonored by her half-brother Amnon, seeks refuge and comfort from her brother Absalom.
Absalom, with a vengeful gesture and a somber gaze turned outward, swears to avenge her, while a servant girl weeps in the background.
The finesse of the execution on porcelain attests to exceptional technical virtuosity: the modeling of the flesh, the precision of the drapery with its purplish sheen, and the rendering of the orientalist and theatrical atmosphere are all rendered with an unalterable brilliance and freshness of color.
Signed “Cabanel” at the bottom center
Late 19th century (circa 1880–1900)
Presented in its imposing original frame of wood and gilded stucco with rich decoration of acanthus scrollsand pearl friezes.
Overalldimensions (with frame): H. 48 × W. 53 × D. 9 cm
Painting(visible area): H. 20 × W. 26 cm
