1911 René Lalique - Four Scarab Box In Electric Blue Glass
Artist: René Lalique (1860-1945)
Covered box "Quatre Scarabées" in blue molded-pressed glass by René Lalique, France, 1911
The lid features a remarkable relief decoration of four stylized scarabs surrounding a central flower and plant motifs characteristic of Lalique's late Art Nouveau period.
The satin-finish treatment of the glass highlights the depth of the sculpted decoration and the luminous shades of opalescent blue. The base bears the molded signature "R. Lalique".
This piece perfectly illustrates Lalique's interest in naturalistic themes, symbolist insects and organic forms, in a stylistic transition between Art Nouveau and the beginnings of Art Deco.
