"Epinoches "tripod vase
Unique Piece
Former Giuseppe Cappa collection
France, circa 1878-1880
Rare and important Japanese vase from the pre-Art Nouveau period
Translucent blown glass with polychrome enamel decoration and gold highlights depicting Epinoches evolving in an aquatic landscape animated by a dragonfly.
The piece rests on three large organic iridescent mauve glass applications, enriched with applied ivory motifs and drops added under the neck, testifying to the innovative decorative research carried out in Parisian workshops at the end of the 19th century.
The naturalistic treatment of the decoration, the transparency of the glass and the freedom of composition bring this work closer to the creations of Eugène Rousseau and Ernest-Baptiste Leveillé, major fi-gures of French Japonism in the glass arts.
