French Design Secretary Desk In Cherry Wood And Black-lacquered Wood, Circa 1960

An elegant French writing desk made around 1960, which soberly and precisely captures the aesthetic of French design during the Trente Glorieuses.

Its structure is based on a cherry wood veneer cabinet with perfectly balanced lines, supported by a remarkable black-lacquered cross-leg base. This airy construction gives the piece a particularly elegant, graphic presence while highlighting the warmth of the light-colored wood.

The front, composed of six drawers of varying sizes, is accentuated by a black frame that structures the piece with great finesse. The circular brass handles, with their understated and timeless design, punctuate the composition and contribute to its balance.

The drop-down panel reveals an interior that is entirely original, lined with a burgundy-red fabric. Two drawers and several compartments allow for the organization of mail, documents, and writing accessories in keeping with the piece’s original function, while today offering storage space that is as practical as it is elegant.

With its precise design, well-balanced proportions, and refined combination of cherry wood, black lacquer, and the deep red of the interior, this writing desk is part of the great tradition of French furniture from the 1950s and 1960s. Its remarkably modern aesthetic blends naturally with contemporary interiors as well as with more classic decor.

Serving as a work desk, an accent piece, and a true decorative statement, it is a fine example of French craftsmanship from this period.
