French Louis XV Cartel Pendulum Clock In Ebonized Wood And Gilded Bronze, 18th Century
A large French Cartel clock in the Louis XV style, made in the 18th century and signed on the movement: Jacques Mornand, Paris – Faubourg Saint-Antoine.The case is made of ebonized wood and is embellished with refined brass inlay, enriched by numerous gilded and chiseled bronze appliqués. The elegant, flowing forms and the rich rocaille ornamentation fully embody the French decorative style of the 18th century. The crown is surmounted by a gilded bronze figure depicting a cherub seated next to a dog, holding a sphere in his hand, while the lower part is decorated with an eagle with outstretched wings set within a rich arrangement of volutes and plant motifs. The dial consists of twelve white enamel cartouches with Roman numerals in blue, enclosed within a finely chased bronze frame. The interior of the case retains its original inlaid decoration, visible through the front and side glass panels. The original French movement is signed “Jacques Mornand, Paris – Faubourg Saint-Antoine.” It has been recently serviced and is in working order. Condition: The clock is in good overall condition. The bronze appliqués retain a pleasing patina with normal signs of aging. The inlays are well preserved. There is a small area where the veneer is missing at the top of the case, almost completely hidden by the bronze elements and visible in the photographs. The enamel cartouches show slight flaking consistent with their age. One of the glass panels has a slight imperfection along one edge, which is barely noticeable. Dimensions: width 49 cm, height 85 cm, depth 20 cm. Due to the particular fragility of this item, we recommend contacting us before purchase to arrange the most suitable shipping method.
