Italian Silver Pendant, Mourning Memento, 19th Century
A superb silver pendant, likely a mourning keepsake, richly and finely engraved on both sides with religious motifs, dated 1885.
It features superimposed portraits of a couple, with chromolithographs of Christ beneath the man and Mary beneath the woman.
. On the first side, we read, in Italian:Memoria del Mese del Sacro Cuore di Gesù, celebrato nella Venerabile Chiesa di S. Eustachio.P.A.M. D. C. D. G.Rome 1885

. On the reverse side, a centered cross bears the christogram IHS (Jesus Hominum Salvator) within a rich floral design.
Dimensions: 5.2 x 4.5 cm (closed medallion)... 7 cm with the bail. An Italian master goldsmith’s hallmark on the bail attachment: a face turned to the right.
Weight: 31.40 g (weight of the medallion alone, without the photographs inside).
