Reliquary Of The Seven Saints, Made From Their Bones, 19th Century
Reliquary of the Seven Saints ex-ossibus sewn onto a red velvet background edged with gold braid. The relics appear to surround a medallion depicting the face of Christ (pewter/aluminum). Late 19th century.
The unique feature of this reliquary frame lies in the relics of the 11,000 Virgins.
As a bit of background, St. Ursula (4th century) was persecuted and killed for wishing to preserve her virginity and her faith in Christianity, along with her disciples, likely numbering ten.
During the Middle Ages (22nd century), the tomb of the female martyrs was discovered with the epitaph "XIMV," a mistranslation of the Latin XI (eleven) M (thousand) V (virgins). It should actually have been read as “Eleven Virgin Martyrs.”
Dimensions: Total: 31 x 25 cm; Visible area: 25 x 19.5 cm
Beautiful and delicate convent craftsmanship.
A slight chip on the top of the frame’s molding, barely visible (last photo)
