Hiroyuki or Koun Nakatani, 1890–1945. Born in Toyama Prefecture—he graduated from the sculpture department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1913. He taught at the Tokyo Prefectural Industrial School until 1923.
In 1925, he was admitted for the first time to the 4th Imperial Exhibition. He was accepted there every year until 1933 - He was subsequently granted the status of mukansa, meaning an exhibitor exempt from jury selection—a distinction reserved for already established artists. - He began producing portraits of theater actors and famous priests.
