Seated Nude - Terracotta Circa 1950 By Masaru Kinouchi 1892-1977 #392
Artist: Masaru Kinouchi 1892-1977 Japon
Terracotta, signed under the base. A similar example is reproduced in the catalogue "Kinouchi Retrospective - 100 Years, the Symphony of a Life - 1992," page 49 / Ibaraki Museum (see end of slideshow). There is a stain at the junction of the hair curl and the arm. From 1914, he studied with Fumio Asakura (a student of Rodin). He participated in the Bunten and Teiten exhibitions (Salons). He resided in France from 1921 to 1935, studying with Antoine Bourdelle at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. He participated in the Salon des Tuileries in 1927 and the Salon d'Automne in 1928. He learned ceramics in Edmond Lachenal's workshop and developed a passion for the terracotta technique. He returned to Japan in 1938 for the "Masaru Kinouchi Ceramics Exhibition." After the war, the artist produced tirelessly... until 1977. The nude was his preferred subject. Silhouettes and masses took precedence over details. He wrote: “Sculpture is not a matter of representation, but of presence. It is not about making something resemble something, but about making it exist.” A certificate and illustrated biography will be provided to the buyer.
