The artist was born near Hiroshima. At the age of 16, he was apprenticed to a woodcarver. He enrolled at the Japan Art School. In 1930, while still a student, he was selected for the 11th Teiten (Fine Arts Salon). He then studied with woodcarver Masahiro Sawada. 1937: Built a studio in Kawasaki. 1941 to 43: Teacher at the School of Fine Arts. 1943: Assigned to promote Hokkaido coal mines through sculpture. After the war, his sculptures became very popular. Exhibitions, numerous monuments... In 1976, he was awarded the Third Order of the Sacred Treasure. In 1988, he was awarded the Order of Culture. Museum created in 1993 following the artist's donation of his studio. he would work until his last days.
