Small Art Deco Bronze Sculpture Signed “kotchar” – Stylized Fennec Fox – Parisian Period, 1920
A rare small bronze sculpture depicting a stylized fennec fox, serving as a trinket dish or desk ornament, signed “Kotchar.”
With its clean lines, stylized depiction of the animal, and balanced composition, this sculpture is fully in keeping with the Art Deco aesthetic and the artistic explorations of the Parisian avant-garde between the two world wars.
The signature “Kotchar” refers to Ervand Kotchar (1899–1979), one of the leading figures of modern Armenian art. Trained in Tbilisi and later based in Paris from 1923 to 1936, he quickly became part of the avant-garde artistic circles. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon d’Automne, and the Salon des Surindépendants, where his works were displayed alongside those of the greatest artists of his time, including Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger, Joan Miró, Jean Arp, Piet Mondrian, and Constantin Brancusi.
A pioneer of “painting in space”—an innovative approach blending painting, sculpture, and movement—Ervand Kotchar developed a unique artistic language characterized by a remarkable simplification of forms, great expressive power, and a resolutely modern vision. His work is now held in several major institutions, and he is considered one of the most important 20th-century artists in Armenia.
